“Any time the work can be worn beyond the runway is so gratifying,” Daniel Roseberry once said, encapsulating the ethos that drives his vision for Schiaparelli. Since taking the reins as Artistic Director in 2019, Roseberry has steered the storied Parisian couture house into a new era marked by audacity and growth.
Born in 1985 and raised in Plano, Texas by a priest father and an artist mother, Roseberry’s eclectic background set the stage for his avant-garde vision. His career trajectory took a decisive turn at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, leading him to a decade-long tenure at Thom Browne before his groundbreaking move to Schiaparelli. Here, he revived the house’s surrealist legacy, established by its founder Elsa Schiaparelli, blending it with a bold modernity that disrupts as much as it delights. His designs often feature a daring use of materials—gold, repurposed denim, molded metals—that marry the house’s historical narrative with a forward-looking ethos.
One of Roseberry’s most notable pieces is the celestial gown worn by Michaela Coel at the Met Gala, a masterpiece adorned with pearls and 130,000 crystals, demanding nearly 4,000 hours of meticulous craftsmanship. This creation is a testament to his philosophy of storytelling through couture, where each design is not only a visual spectacle but an emotive journey.
Despite the initial challenges of adjusting to Parisian life and couture culture, Roseberry’s debut collection was a proclamation of his unique narrative-driven design approach. It was a collection that anticipated and shaped critical acclaim, setting a high bar for his tenure.
Today, Roseberry’s influence at Schiaparelli is a beacon of how tradition and innovation can coexist in harmony. His work is a continual dialogue between the house’s surreal roots and his own contemporary interpretations, ensuring that Schiaparelli not only remains relevant but also leads the conversation in modern couture.
In Daniel Roseberry’s hands, Schiaparelli is not merely surviving; it is vividly, boldly alive—pushing boundaries and redefining the future of fashion with every stitch.
