In a world where fashion trends come and go, how does the past shape the future of fashion? Teddy Santis, the founder of Aimé Leon Dore (ALD), answers this question by seamlessly merging nostalgic influences from his Greek heritage with the dynamic energy of modern street culture. His unique approach not only redefines menswear but also challenges us to see the enduring influence of cultural roots in contemporary design.
Raised in Queens, New York, Teddy Santis infuses ALD with the rich cultural heritage of his upbringing, deeply influenced by the iconic ’90s hip-hop scene. His designs draw from vintage Americana, European tailoring, and the vibrant street style of New York City, creating a unique fashion narrative that resonates across diverse cultures.
Through collaborations with established brands like New Balance and Clarks, Santis breathes new life into classic footwear, infusing them with his aesthetic that balances respect for tradition with forward-thinking design.
In January 2022, ALD’s commitment to blending classic and contemporary styles was further recognized with an investment from LVMH Ventures, underscoring the brand’s potential for growth and sustained impact in the fashion industry.
Beyond fashion, Santis is committed to building a community around ALD, particularly through its SoHo flagship store. This space serves as a cultural hub, promoting a lifestyle that reflects the authenticity and vibrancy of street culture and the arts.’
Reflecting on the essence of his brand, Santis emphasizes, “The name means nothing if we aren’t staying true to why we are doing this. Nobody wants to wear anything today unless they believe in what it represents,” underscoring his dedication to genuine fashion brand values and cultural integrity. Furthering this ethos, Santis has drawn inspiration from iconic fashion figures such as Ralph Lauren, whose influence has been a guiding light in his journey. He shared in an interview, “For me, Ralph Lauren is the perfect thing. I discovered Ralph when I was 15, and now that I’m in my 30s, I feel even more connected because they keep educating you and showing you things that put you outside the comfort level of a polo or an oxford.”
As ALD continues to grow, Teddy Santis remains focused on maintaining the brand’s integrity and authenticity. His vision extends beyond selling clothes; it’s about telling stories that resonate deeply with his audience’s real-life experiences and aspirations, much like the fashion icons who have inspired him. By merging the past with a visionary approach, Santis crafts a legacy that transcends current trends, illustrating how historical influences shape the future and ensuring that New York’s streetwear legacy continues to inspire new generations.
