SHIFTING SHAPES

Photographer Garrett Naccarato and stylist Ilanka Verhoeven collaborate on the story for The Fashionography. In this submission called “Shifting Shapes,” the duo embarks on a journey to redefine the essence of form and fashion. Transcending traditional shapes and the conventional use of clothing, Ilanka has masterfully utilized a variety of unconventional materials such as latex, hardware, and rubber to visualize the concept of “shifting shapes.” This approach is not merely a stylistic choice but a philosophical response to the oversaturation of images and fashion collections that pervade the industry today. Verhoeven’s intention was to strip back to the basics and ponder the fundamental question: “What shapes can we create through surface materials and visual language?”

This inquiry led to an exploration of form, texture, and movement. Together with photographer Garrett Naccarato, Verhoeven delved into how these conceived shapes could correlate with body movements. The collaboration is a celebration of a call to view fashion not just as attire but as art that is deeply intertwined with the human form. Through “Shifting Shapes,” Naccarato and Verhoeven invite us to witness a fashion story that is as much about the transformation of materials as it is about the evolution of perception, challenging us to see beyond the ordinary and embrace the extraordinary potential of fashion to shape our understanding of beauty and identity.
