Each year, IKEA’s Democratic Design Days previews what’s next. This time, it’s a collaboration with Swedish designer Gustaf Westman that’s getting early buzz, and for good reason.

Known for his squiggly mirrors and pastel furniture that quietly dominates your feed, Westman brings that same playful energy to IKEA’s upcoming collection. He’s one of three voices shaping the project, which rethinks how we gather and host, just in time for the holiday season.

The designs stick to what he does best, curved shapes, thick contours, and pieces that look like they were drawn in one stroke. It’s casual but bold, less about centerpieces and more about how the table actually feels.

Evelina Kroon, another Stockholm-based artist, joins with a contrasting lens: large-scale stripes, warm colors, and touches pulled from Swedish childhood memories. Both designers are thinking beyond the typical end-of-year decor. This isn’t a holiday collection in the traditional sense, it’s about atmosphere more than occasion.

Magdalena Walther, product developer at IKEA, puts it plainly: the goal is to make people feel welcome. Think open tables, more seats, no need to wait for an invitation.

The full reveal lands in September or October, and the drop will be limited. If Westman’s past launches are any clue, his mirrors have sold out repeatedly, this won’t stay on shelves for long.
