Andreas Kronthaler, born in Tyrol, Austria, in 1966, is a fashion designer and the creative director of Vivienne Westwood. Initially trained in jewelry design at Ortwein Art School in Graz, he later pursued fashion design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. In 1988, he met Vivienne Westwood, who was teaching at the university, and moved to London in 1989 to work with her. Their professional collaboration evolved into a personal partnership, culminating in marriage in 1992. Over the years, Kronthaler became an integral part of the brand, and in 2016, the Gold Label collection was renamed Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, acknowledging his significant contribution to the house’s creative direction.

Kronthaler’s design philosophy is characterized by a fusion of historical references and avant-garde aesthetics. He often draws inspiration from various eras, notably the Renaissance, incorporating elements like pluderhosen, breeches, and doublets into contemporary fashion. His collections are known for their theatricality, gender-fluid silhouettes, and a palette that ranges from muted tones to vibrant patterns. For instance, the Fall 2025 collection featured Harris Tweed in diverse shades and patterns, Yorkshire wool, and tartan, reflecting his commitment to traditional craftsmanship blended with modern design.

Following Westwood’s passing in 2022, Kronthaler has continued to lead the brand, infusing it with his unique vision while honoring its legacy. His recent collections have been personal tributes, drawing from Westwood’s wardrobe and their shared experiences. He emphasizes the importance of tailoring, a skill he attributes to Westwood’s influence, stating, “Tailoring is an English invention; the formality it gives you is a framework to express yourself.” Kronthaler’s ability to blend historical elements with contemporary design ensures that the Vivienne Westwood brand remains both relevant and innovative in today’s fashion landscape.
