Bruce Usher, a London-based creative director, has carved a distinctive niche in fashion and visual culture through his multidisciplinary approach to storytelling and identity. After studying graphic design at Leeds University, he began his career at Inventory Studio before founding his own practice in 2015. Usher’s work spans editorial, branding, and publishing, with a focus on crafting visual narratives that resonate across diverse platforms. His collaborations with renowned photographers and artists have positioned him at the forefront of contemporary creative direction.
Usher’s editorial contributions include art direction for publications such as Arena Homme+, Pop, and D Repubblica, where he has redefined visual storytelling through innovative layouts and concepts. As the creative director of Middle Plane magazine since 2018, he has curated issues that blend art, fashion, and culture, featuring collaborators like Juergen Teller, Gus Van Sant, and Fumiko Imano. His projects often explore themes of movement and identity, exemplified by his collaboration with photographer Paul Phung on a series inspired by Eadweard Muybridge’s studies of motion. This work, characterized by its tactile presentation and conceptual depth, underscores Usher’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of visual communication.
Beyond editorial, Usher has engaged in projects that intersect design and narrative, such as the publication “I Can Speak with Shapes,” created with illustrator Antti Kalevi. This book, which transforms abstract illustrations into a decipherable visual poem, reflects his interest in the interplay between form and meaning. Usher’s ability to infuse projects with conceptual rigor and aesthetic clarity has made him a sought-after collaborator in the fashion industry and beyond. Through his studio, he continues to explore new avenues for storytelling, solidifying his role as a dynamic force in contemporary visual culture.
