Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana

Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are the Sicilian architects of one of the most distinct aesthetics in fashion: an unapologetically Italian glamour that celebrates sensuality, family, and tradition. Their partnership—both creative and personal—began when Dolce called Gabbana at the studio where he worked, and from there, a shared vision blossomed. Their first collection debuted at Milan Fashion Week in 1985, and it was clear from the start that their Mediterranean-inspired romance would become something much bigger.

Throughout the ’90s, Dolce & Gabbana defined the idea of sexy, luxe fashion with their body-conscious silhouettes, vibrant prints, and unapologetic devotion to opulence. In a decade dominated by minimalism, they leaned in to maximalist energy, winning the Woolmark Prize in 1991 and collaborating with pop icons like Madonna, who famously donned their elaborate corset for her ‘Girlie Show’ world tour. By mixing high fashion with everyday Italian references, they managed to create clothes that were both aspirational and evocative of la dolce vita.

Not without controversy, the duo faced scrutiny in 2013 over tax evasion charges, which were ultimately overturned in 2014. A 2018 ad campaign, deemed culturally insensitive, sparked public backlash and cost them a significant chunk of their Asian market. But Dolce & Gabbana, true to form, pivoted with grandeur—staging a 2019 Alta Moda show at the ancient Greek Temple of Concordia, an opulent reminder that their vision transcends time and controversy.

Though they ended their romantic relationship in 2005, Dolce and Gabbana’s creative partnership has endured, remaining at the helm of their eponymous label and continuing to push the envelope. Their work reflects a passion for their Italian roots—a celebration of craft, fantasy, and the joys of life. Decades in, they’re still dreaming in technicolor, still committed to the mythic glamour that made them household names.
