Jawara Wauchope, known professionally as Jawara, is a Jamaican-American hairstylist whose work has redefined the boundaries of hair as both art and cultural expression. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, he was immersed in a world where hair was central to identity and community. His early experiences in his aunt’s salon, combined with the vibrant aesthetics of dancehall culture, laid the foundation for his unique approach to hairstyling. After returning to New York, he pursued studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Aveda Institute, financing his education through salon work. A brief stint in fashion merchandising reaffirmed his passion for hairstyling, leading him to assist industry legends like Sam McKnight, Guido Palau, and Luigi Murenu before launching his solo career in 2013.

Jawara’s innovative techniques and versatility have made him a sought-after stylist for both editorial and celebrity clients. His portfolio includes collaborations with Beyoncé, Rihanna, Solange, Cardi B, and Bella Hadid, as well as brands like Off-White, Gucci, Chanel, and Hermès. Notable projects include the crystal-embellished ponytails for Area’s runway shows and the sculptural hairstyles featured in Solange’s visual albums. His work is regularly showcased in publications such as Vogue, i-D, Dazed, and W Magazine. In recognition of his contributions to the industry, he has been honored with the British Fashion Council’s New Wave Creatives Award and named to the Business of Fashion 500 and Dazed 100 lists.

Beyond his styling achievements, Jawara is committed to education and representation within the beauty industry. As the Senior Beauty Editor-at-Large for i-D Magazine and a Global Styling Ambassador for Dyson Hair, he advocates for diversity and inclusivity backstage and in salons. His exhibitions, such as “Tallawah,” co-created with photographer Nadine Ijewere, celebrate the aesthetics of the Jamaican diaspora and challenge conventional beauty standards. Through his work, Jawara continues to inspire a new generation of artists to embrace cultural heritage and innovation in hairstyling.
