Rok Hwang

Rok Hwang, the Korean-born designer behind the label Rokh, has steadily emerged as a compelling voice in contemporary fashion, known for his meticulous deconstruction of wardrobe staples. Raised in Austin, Texas, Hwang pursued fashion at Central Saint Martins in London, earning both BA and MA degrees under the mentorship of the late Louise Wilson. His graduate collection in 2009 garnered immediate attention, leading to his recruitment by Phoebe Philo at Céline, where he contributed to the brand’s ready-to-wear collections. Subsequent freelance roles at Chloé and Louis Vuitton further honed his design sensibilities, culminating in the launch of his own label, Rokh, in 2016.
Rokh’s aesthetic is characterized by a fusion of structured tailoring and experimental detailing, often blurring the lines between masculine and feminine silhouettes. Hwang’s designs frequently feature unconventional placements of buckles, buttons, and seams, allowing for customizable wear and a sense of personal expression. His commitment to craftsmanship and innovation was recognized in 2018 when he received the Special Prize at the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers. The brand’s collections have since been showcased at Paris Fashion Week, attracting a global clientele and securing over 120 international stockists.
In recent years, Hwang has expanded Rokh’s reach through strategic collaborations, including a notable partnership with H&M in 2024 that brought his deconstructed designs to a broader audience. The collection featured transformable garments that maintained the brand’s signature edge while offering accessibility. Hwang’s ability to balance avant-garde concepts with wearability has solidified his reputation as a designer who challenges conventions while respecting the wearer’s individuality. As Rokh continues to evolve, Hwang remains committed to creating pieces that are both innovative and enduring, reflecting a deep understanding of fashion’s transformative power.
