L’Oréal is betting that artificial intelligence can do more for beauty than recommend face cream. In Paris this week, the French cosmetics giant revealed a partnership with Nvidia, the Silicon Valley chipmaker, to infuse generative AI into the beauty world. L’Oréal will plug Nvidia’s AI computing platform into its Beauty Tech Atelier innovation lab to create personalized digital services, from real-time skin diagnostics to virtual makeup try-ons, aimed at transforming how consumers shop for beauty.

L’Oréal’s chief digital officer cast the deal as a bridge of creativity and technology, saying it will help turn consumers’ beauty “dreams into reality”. Nvidia’s retail industry head likewise touted AI’s potential to make beauty experiences “seamless, rewarding and fun,” hinting that everything from marketing campaigns to virtual makeovers could be turbocharged by the technology.

For years, beauty brands have flirted with digital gadgets and apps. But the Nvidia alliance suggests that AI-driven personalization is shifting from novelty to the core of L’Oréal’s strategy.
