Adeam Resort 2023 Collection

For Adeam Resort 2023, designer Hanako Maeda explores the possibilities of shapes and colors inspired by her favorite works of art. Maeda’s love for art began in childhood, when she first visited The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where she encountered various works of art from Ancient Egypt and Greece to Modern and Contemporary years. Maeda was captivated by sculptor and designer Isamu Noguchi’s Water Stone in The Met’s collection of Asian Art. A serene, abstract garden hiding an invisible fountain, challenging the relationship between interior and exterior space. Maeda was drawn to the simplicity and impact of the piece. Noguchi’s work made such an impression on Maeda that as well as providing the inspiration for Resort 2023, Heaven at Sogetsu Plaza, an indoor garden in Tokyo completed by the sculptor in 1978, also provided the backdrop for the collection to be photographed.

This season’s tailoring features subdued tones of beige, navy, and grey, which highlight geometric shapes to create asymmetrical silhouettes. The Bricolage Trench comes in a bicolor of beige mélange and navy, fusing a beige trench coat with a navy vest overlay, worn over the shoulder for a more relaxed look. A dress interpretation of this coat, the Bricolage Trench Dress, features an asymmetrical collar which adds sharp tailored details to a fitted strapless silhouette. The Bricolage Jacket features an open Kimono-neckline combined with a high-waisted bel acting as a modern obi.

Japanese Cotton Poplin appears in monochrome to accentuate the silhouette. The Water Stone Dress features an asymmetrical-sliced neckline that elegantly grazes the collarbone. The Water Stone Shirt has a similar sliced neckline with collared shirt details. The Lewitt Shirt features a twisted hem to hug the curves of the body.

In addition to exploration of shapes, this season, Maeda focuses on bright neons and pastels, presented to contrast one another. Inspired by the works of artists like Piet Mondrian and Mark Rothko, the geometric abstraction of color fields conveys a sense of intensity to draw the eye. The Rothko Sweater features contrasting neon and pastel colors patch-worked in an asymmetrical pattern. The Mondrian Sweater and Tank feature patch-worked knit panels in monochrome, adding shadow and depth to the color.
