brakence has announced marroW, releasing October 23. His first album since 2022’s hypochondriac follows the September 25 release of “ready or noT,” a single accompanied by a video from musician and filmmaker Quadeca.
Quadeca directed and edited the video, taking on a production that involved puppeteers. In an Instagram statement, he described the work as unfamiliar territory and said the project had been in development for a long time. The pair previously recorded “A La Carte,” released in 2023.
While making hypochondriac, brakence sometimes composed a song’s ending before finding its beginning. In an NPR interview published in 2023, he explained that the closing passage of “teeth” had been attached to several different pieces before he found its place. He also described adding sections after a pop song’s conventional structure, allowing its musical themes to develop further.
