Helmut Lang’s LA Exhibition

Helmut Lang is set to unveil a new chapter of the artistic journey in Los Angeles with “What remains behind,” a solo exhibition at the Schindler House under the MAK Center’s umbrella. Curated by Neville Wakefield, it draws on Lang’s enduring connection to materials, or as he puts it: “with a past, elements with irreplaceable presence and with scars and memories of a former purpose.”

The works on display might look austere at first glance, yet they pulse with layers of history. Mattress foam, rubber, and wax—once pliable—now appear recast into solid, sculptural shapes that still bear the subtle evidence of their origins. The result is an environment suspended between memory and transformation, an echo of Lang’s longtime fascination with reinvention.

This foray into sculpture coincides with a new wave of interest in the Helmut Lang brand, which has continued under creative director Peter Do since 2023. While the label advances its own path, Lang himself remains intent on exploring the tactile possibilities of art. What remains behind, open from February 19 through May 4, 2025, is a testament to that dedication: a nod to where he’s been and where he’s taking us next.
