Stone Island is taking its partnership with New Balance to the next chapter by introducing a new spin on the ‘90s-era 998. This marks their first foray into transforming that classic silhouette—one that originally cemented itself as an early adopter of ABZORB cushioning. Since joining forces on previous running models, the two labels have found a steady groove in merging performance technology with a streamlined, style-first approach.

For this release, Stone Island channels its famed Raso Gommato—a coated cotton fabric that traces back to Massimo Osti’s experiments in the mid-1980s. The shoe’s upper embraces a polyurethane-treated canvas, referencing the satin-like texture of the brand’s signature material without reading too precious. Rich nubuck panels and reflective accents complete the look, while the translucent outsole reveals “stone island product research” just beneath the surface, next to a subtle nod to the “new balance 998.” Of course, the Compass badge gets its moment on the tongue, grounding this design firmly in Stone Island DNA.

With Moncler having fully integrated Stone Island in 2021, the label’s momentum for boundary-pushing textiles continues in full force. This fresh collaboration arrives in a muted mauve, plum, and copper maroon palette that’s said to echo Stone Island’s upcoming Spring/Summer 2025 range. True to New Balance’s heritage, ABZORB foam runs through the midsole, prioritizing comfort for daily wear.

The drop lands on March 27 at select Stone Island locations and online, with access limited to MyStoneIsland account holders who signed up earlier this month through the brand’s site and WeChat portal. Pricing details remain under wraps for now, but don’t be surprised if these limited pairs become a fast-moving addition to the ongoing Stone Island and New Balance story.
