Maison Margiela is moving ahead, even as the industry speculates about the label’s trajectory after John Galliano’s departure. On Friday, the house dropped its inaugural Lunar New Year capsule—a three-piece series guided by the notion of “The Renewal” for the Year of the Snake.
In a brand statement, Margiela explains that it aims to “weave its auspicious symbolism with the profound ties between vision and reality, moon and earth, dreams and the passage of time.” That concept takes shape in a hooded sweatshirt, a T-shirt, and a printed silk scarf.
The sweatshirt and tee, both in soft neutrals, carry a streamlined “Renewal” motif across the chest, framing the lunar cycle around a central full moon embroidered with the Chinese character for “snake.” Meanwhile, the silk scarf nods to the old-school Snakes and Ladders board game. Lunar phases circle the perimeter, while stylized serpents slither across ladder graphics in the middle.
Maison Margiela has been quietly testing new directions lately, with ongoing experimentation in its ready-to-wear lines. This Lunar New Year capsule underscores that the label is still exploring fresh terrain, even during a time of flux. The collection is now available online and in selected boutiques.
