Alberta Ferretti, the Italian designer who built an empire on romantic gowns and delicate drapery, has stepped away from the creative helm of her eponymous brand. After more than four decades defining ethereal femininity on the runway, Ferretti announced her decision in September 2024, marking her last show under the colonnade of Milan’s Leonardo da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology. In her open letter, Ferretti spoke of the bittersweet nature of the decision, highlighting her gratitude towards key collaborators like Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, and Franca Sozzani—individuals who were instrumental in bringing her vision to life.

Ferretti’s career has been all about creating beauty. She launched her namesake label in 1974 and quickly became a staple at Milan Fashion Week by the early eighties, her collection always recognizable for its floaty dresses, intricate embellishments, and expert craftsmanship. Beyond the runway, she expanded her brand with Aeffe, co-founded with her brother Massimo, to become one of Italy’s major fashion powerhouses. Aeffe’s reach has grown to include Moschino, Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini, and Pollini—each carrying the distinct touch that made Ferretti’s vision so influential.

Despite stepping down as creative director, Ferretti remains Vice President of Aeffe Group, continuing to guide the business alongside her brother. This shift doesn’t mean the end of the Alberta Ferretti name—it’s simply a transition into a new era. She has promised that a successor will soon be announced, one who will carry forward the codes of the brand while finding a new way to speak to a changing fashion landscape.

Ferretti’s work extends beyond just creating clothing—she’s been a true ambassador for Italian culture and craftsmanship. Over her career, she’s earned accolades like the Cavalieri del Lavoro and the Women in Cinema Award, celebrating her influence not only in fashion but also in the broader cultural realm. As Ferretti steps away from the spotlight, the legacy she leaves behind is nothing short of monumental—a story woven with tulle, devotion, and an enduring love for beauty.
