Ethan James Green

Ethan James Green captures the current moment by treating portraiture as both mirror and stage. Born in Michigan and based in New York, he brings a directness that reflects a Midwest upbringing and a city-savvy eye, focusing on identity, sexuality, and style in ways that feel in sync with now.
His 2019 debut, Young New York (Aperture), documents queer life downtown through close-knit portraits that outline a shifting cultural landscape. His second book, Bombshell (Baron, 2024), redefines the term by inviting his subjects to interpret femininity and allure on their own terms. In 2022, Green opened New York Life Gallery in Chinatown, offering a platform for emerging and mid-career artists, little-seen archives, and key works from the twentieth century.
Green’s images have appeared in Aperture, Arena Homme+, Dazed, Double Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, i-D, L’Uomo Vogue, MARFA, M le Monde, Perfect, The New Yorker, Time, Vogue, Vogue Italia, W Magazine, and WSJ Magazine. His collaborations include Alexander McQueen, Dior, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, Prada, Tom Ford, and Versace. Across all projects, he spotlights personal narratives that expand our sense of fashion and portraiture alike.
