Rei Kawakubo

Rei Kawakubo, the visionary behind Comme des Garçons, has never been interested in playing by the rules. With no formal training in fashion, her journey from a freelance stylist to establishing one of the most boundary-pushing brands in the world is a testament to her uncompromising vision. She didn’t set out to start a revolution, but her 1981 Paris debut, with its deconstructed aesthetics, turned fashion on its head and earned her a cult following. Her fans, nicknamed “the crows,” embraced her raw, unconventional beauty—a stark contrast to the industry’s prevailing norms.
Kawakubo’s empire isn’t just about clothes; it’s a mindset. She co-founded Dover Street Market in 2004 with her husband Adrian Joffe, creating a global retail phenomenon that continues to set the bar for multi-brand experiences. Comme des Garçons now boasts over 20 lines, including Junya Watanabe and Kei Ninomiya’s Noir, nurturing a generation of avant-garde talent.
In 2019, Kawakubo received the Isamu Noguchi Award, becoming the first fashion designer to do so. It’s a fitting honor for someone whose work effortlessly bridges Eastern and Western influences, redefining what fashion can be, one collection at a time. Rei Kawakubo doesn’t just make clothes; she creates entire worlds, each more thought-provoking than the last, forever challenging how we define beauty and wearability.
