Mugler is charting a new path with the appointment of Miguel Castro Freitas as its creative director. The move follows Casey Cadwallader’s decision to step away after seven transformative years. Freitas, who has worked in design for two decades, brings an unexpected layer to the role: he trained in dance, echoing Manfred Thierry Mugler’s own performance background and hinting at what might lie ahead for the house.

“It is an honor to join the spectacular house of Mugler,” Freitas said in a statement. “As one of the twentieth century’s great couturiers, Mr Mugler reimagined the power and limits of fashion. Alongside the teams, I am thrilled to bring my own vision, story, and emotion to this monumental heritage.”

“Miguel lives and breathes the Mugler spirit,” added Danièle Lahana-Aidenbaum, global brand president of Mugler fashion and fragrances. “His deep understanding of Mugler’s DNA and his vast creativity and talent made him a natural choice.”

Cadwallader, who ushered Mugler into a vibrant era, will be remembered for his casting choices and a bold reinvention of silhouettes. He also explored video-driven presentations during the global shutdown, all while pioneering a see-now-buy-now model that let audiences claim key pieces in real time.

“Mugler is like no other, and it was exciting to lean into all that it could mean in today’s culture,” he said. “I am forever grateful to my team, collaborators, and friends, whose support and talents made this vision come to life.”

Freitas officially starts on April 1. He will debut his first collection during Paris Fashion Week this fall, in time for spring/summer 2026.
