Prada Re-Nylon x National Geographic’s Latest Chapter: Drowning in Noise

Benedict Cumberbatch heads to the Arctic Circle in the second film of Prada’s ongoing collaboration with National Geographic CreativeWorks, a project that unpacks the environmental realities shaping our world. This time, the focus is on sound—or more precisely, the increasing noise pollution disrupting marine life.

Filmed in Bodø, Norway, Drowning in Noise dives into the impact of human activity on the underwater sonic environment. The Arctic’s whales and oceanic mammals rely on sound to navigate, communicate, and survive, with whale songs traveling across entire ocean basins. But human-made noise—shipping traffic, seismic oil exploration, and industrial activity—is drowning out these natural frequencies, disrupting ecosystems in ways scientists are only beginning to fully understand.

Joining Cumberbatch is marine biologist Dr. Heike Vester, whose work centers on the social behavior and bioacoustics of marine animals. Alongside environmental advocate Valentina Gottlieb, they explore both the problem and potential solutions, emphasizing the importance of preserving the delicate balance of underwater life.

The film also connects to Prada’s broader sustainability efforts. One percent of proceeds from the Prada Re-Nylon for SEA BEYOND Collection directly support SEA BEYOND, the brand’s educational program with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, dedicated to ocean conservation.
