The CFDA designer shapes “A Magazine Curated By” with a lens on Latin-American culture, activism, and community.

In the decade since launching his namesake label, Willy Chavarria has consistently underscored one principle: fashion is inherently political. Now, the designer and CFDA member expands his creative influence by stepping into the role of guest editor for the latest issue of Antwerp-based publication, “A Magazine Curated By,” known for entrusting each edition to a different creative voice.
Raised in a Mexican-American household in Huron, California, Chavarria’s aesthetic is deeply rooted in the visual identity of both urban and rural Chicano communities of California’s Central Valley. His edition of the magazine highlights Latin-American heritage, extending its narrative from aesthetics into activism.
True to his established approach, Chavarria confronts themes central to his ethos—identity, human dignity, and communal solidarity. These principles drive the issue, which culminates in an intimate dialogue between Chavarria and Bishop Mariann Budde, recognized globally for her sermon during the latest American presidential inauguration. Their candid exchange on faith, compassion, and love reflects the broader message encapsulated in the edition’s evocative title, “Love Commandments.”
The collaboration further solidifies Chavarria’s standing as a designer whose voice resonates far beyond the runway, anchoring his vision in cultural dialogue and meaningful community engagement.
