CHANEL is lending its support to Singaporean director Eric Khoo‘s latest film, “Spirit World.” Shot in Japan and produced by Matilde Incerti, the film tells the story of musician Claire Emery, played by Catherine Deneuve, who travels to Tokyo for a final concert before her sudden transformation into a ghost. Guided by Yuzo, portrayed by Yutaka Takenouchi, Emery’s journey through the spirit realm taps into the rich tradition of ghost mythology in Japanese culture. From its Edo period roots in painting and theater to J-Horror’s rise in film, the exploration of the afterlife has long been a staple of Japanese storytelling.
For this production, CHANEL provided financial backing and partnered with costume designer Pascaline Chavanne, as well as supplying jewelry and wardrobe for Deneuve and actress Maiya Goshima. The collaboration deepens CHANEL’s connection with Catherine Deneuve, who has been linked to the brand since her days as the face of N°5 and her recent appearances in CHANEL looks for Christophe Honoré’s “Marcello Mio” at Cannes.
With “Spirit World” premiering on October 11 at the Busan International Film Festival, CHANEL’s involvement underscores its commitment to supporting cinematic talent. Eric Khoo, a pivotal figure in Singaporean cinema, gained international acclaim with films like “Mee Pok Man” and “12 Storeys” in the 1990s, and his work has been showcased at Cannes, MoMA, and the Centre Pompidou. “Spirit World” continues Khoo’s tradition of blending heartfelt narratives with cultural nuance, celebrating the deep connections that endure beyond the mortal world.
