The stylist and cultural power broker behind some of fashion’s most viral moments is taking over creative direction at MAC.

Nicola Formichetti is stepping into a new role as Global Creative Director of MAC Cosmetics, effective May 19, 2025. The announcement, made today by The Estée Lauder Companies, signals a bold creative shift for the brand. Formichetti, known for his work with Lady Gaga and his leadership at Mugler, Diesel, and Uniqlo, brings a cross-disciplinary vision that fuses fashion, technology, and pop culture. His previous collaborations with MAC, including the Nicopanda collection and the Viva Glam campaign, have already left a mark on the brand’s history.
In his new role, Formichetti will oversee MAC’s global creative strategy, influencing everything from product innovation to campaign storytelling and retail experiences. He will report directly to Aïda Moudachirou-Rébois, MAC’s Senior Vice President and Global General Manager. Moudachirou-Rébois described him to Business Wire as “a once-in-a-generation creative talent who perfectly embodies the bold, fearless energy of MAC.”
Formichetti’s multicultural background and his ability to capture the pulse of culture align with MAC’s inclusive perspective on beauty. His appointment is part of The Estée Lauder Companies’ broader “Beauty Reimagined” initiative, aiming to become the most consumer-centric prestige beauty company globally. Jane Hertzmark Hudis, Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer, emphasized that Formichetti’s vision and bold creativity are expected to elevate MAC to new heights.
Reflecting on his new position, Formichetti stated, “MAC has always given me and our community a space to explore , take risks and play. Now I get to bring everything I’ve learned into something truly exciting.”
